What does it mean when a product is listed as a 'Special Order' item?

Special order items aren't something we keep sitting on the shelf in our warehouse — they're either made to order by the manufacturer or shipped from a supplier whose inventory we can't see in real time. That means lead times run longer than our in-stock items, and we're not always able to give a firm ETA right at checkout.
